38 Terabytes of cloud storage capacity created every second?

” Right now, in 2013, 80 “things” per second are connecting to the internet.  Next year that number will reach almost 100 per second, and by 2020, more than 250 things will connect each second.”

According to Cisco, these “things” include:

  • Mobile devices
  • Parking meters
  • Thermostats
  • Cardiac monitors
  • Tires
  • Roads
  • Cars
  • Supermarket shelves
  • Cattle
Obviously, there is a correlation between the number of “things” connecting to the internet (the cloud) and the amount of storage capacity required to save the very data these things are generating.
.
If Cisco’s Connections Counter covers things…what would a capacity counter look like?
.
If we take a projected total cloud capacity of 7.3 Zettabytes by 2020 and divide that by the 50 Billion installed base of “things” Cisco projects, we get an average capacity per “thing” of approximately 150GB.  At 250 “things” per second, could we be looking at 38 Terabytes of cloud storage capacity created every second by 2020?
