8TB In One Drive — How Does That Change IT?

Today, we announced we’re shipping the world’s first 8TB hard disk drive.  This is a pretty big deal (no pun intended). When I first entered this industry the idea of fitting this much capacity on a single hard drive was far from reality. Granted, I’m a little bit of a techie and tend to get overexcited about these kinds of things, but this is a really big step in the storage industry as data centers look to handle the exponential growth of data in today’s world.

Whether we’re talking about the massive amounts of big data being generated at the large-enterprise level or about the continuous stream of digital creations being stored through social media, mobile and the cloud, there is a need for higher capacity, more efficient and lower cost data storage.

IT professionals responsible for architecting public and private data centers are doing everything possible to keep up with the data growth. John Rydning, a Vice President at IDC reported that “Seagate’s new 8TB HDD provides IT managers with a new option for improving storage density in the data center, thus helping them to tackle one of the largest and fastest growing data categories within enterprise storage economically.”

It will be exciting to see this product shipped on a wider scale and to see the impact it makes in data centers.
