A 14.4 TB Hybrid Hard Drive!

Today, Xiotech announced its Hybrid ISE solution…part hard drive part SSD…sounds familiar…

For the past 9 months, I have been touting  Seagate’s Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid hard drive and it’s Adaptive Memory Technology that automatically places frequently used bits of data in SSD to boost performance.

Well…Xiotech’s Hybrid ISE does the same thing, at a much larger scale…like a 14.4TB scale. They call it Continuous Adaptive Data Placements or CADP.  (There’s that Adaptive word again)

“Hybrid ISE’s Continuous Adaptive Data Placement (CADP) patented extensions to the underlying ISE architecture provide the real-time intelligence necessary to deliver adaptive performance from the sealed Hybrid ISE Storage Blade. CADP continuously evaluates the performance cost and the performance benefit of placing data on SSD, and only performs such a replacement when a pattern of evidence shows that it would be profitable to do so.”

It’s no surprise that companies like Seagate at the drive level, and Xiotech at the system level are figuring out how best to utilize the benefits of SSD without the huge cost burden.  They are “adapting” to a changing world where SSD and HDD will co-exist.

There is no doubt that SSD is performance strong, but it’s capacity and data reliability weak.  Face it, NAND wears out over time, so data integrity and reliability is a concern. By building intelligence into the system (or the drive), you can preserve the NAND and make it last much longer…long enough to provide a 5 year warranty.

Sounds like this Hybrid thing is starting to take off…

Check it out.
