Another CES trend: content “wherever we want”

My last post talked about our ability to consume content whenever we want.  But, “whenever we want” is just one aspect that started with the VCR back in the 70s and 80s. Then came the DVD player, more importantly the portable DVD player that allowed us to appease the kids on long car rides.  The idea that we could take content with us simply wet our appetite, and it was only the beginning. The advent of wireless technology and recent advancements in high speed mobile networks led to widespread adoption of the mobile computer (laptops) in the early 2000s, PDAs in the mid-2000s, and today eReaders, smart phones, netbooks and tablets, and of course, portable hard drives.

Such advancements and adoption has ushered in a sense of entitlement that says we can consume content wherever we want.

This is evident in the buzz around CES this coming January. According to the CES website, 2 trends already identified are:

Tablets largely provide lightweight, instant-on, connectivity to content on the internet, social media, etc.  As CES points out in their summary, you can bet a rash of connected devices for tablets will accompany tablets themselves as a major “what to see” at CES this January.

3D television fits more into the criteria of consuming content “however we want”, which I will cover in a future post. Stay tuned.

Internet enabled everything as defined by the CES post talks about “the Internet is what you make of it and CES will highlight  what you can make of marrying the TV with the Net”.  They go on to say that the TV is the low hanging fruit here, but expect network-able features to be embedded into “the vehicle, the camera, the printer, and every screen imaginable”.

What this means for storage…everything! The movement to richer content (3D) and access to content (internet everywhere) means data centers powering the internet and the cloud will require more and more storage. Consumers with access to content whenever & wherever they want will feed the fury by adopting mobile devices (Tablets).  It’s already happening today, and with more options and innovation in comes even greater demand on content storage and distribution.

Seagate will be there to see/hear/feel the action unfold…who the major players are what up-and-comers are emerging in these spaces?  Who will reign supreme on developing products that feed our hunger for content wherever we want?
