How hard are you hitting your wireless carrier’s hard drives?

.

In the age of mobility there is one thing that – depending on your plan – can drive you crazy….wireless data plans. Check out this infographic from dimension data c/o BitRebels.

What is most interesting about this is the amount of data your smartphone uses without you even knowing.  It seems almost constantly, you are hitting hard drives and SSDs in the cloud more than you think.  In fact, we are using cloud compute and cloud storage elements with nearly everything we do on our phones, consciously and unconsciously.

The average user has 41 apps that consume 81% of our data usage. Just looking at what constitutes 1 Gigabyte of data, it’s no wonder we rely on Wi-Fi more and more when it comes to streaming videos and music. If we didn’t we would most definitely be experiencing some serious data overage charges.

The growth of tablets will only feed the fire.  Tablets obviously offer a better video experience, so are we more apt to watch video (movies, TV, YouTube, etc.) on a tablet?  The answer is yes according to a recent study by comScore where they found that “Tablet Audience Nearly 3x as Likely to Watch Video as Smartphone Users” citing that “more than half of tablet users watched video and/or TV content on their device in April 2012, compared to just 20 percent of the smartphone audience, with larger screen sizes making tablets more conducive to video consumption than their smaller-screen cousins. Not only were tablet users more likely to watch video, but they were more likely to view video habitually with 18.9 percent of tablet users watching video content at least once a week, and 9.5 percent watching video nearly every day on their device. Of those viewing video at least once during the month, 1 in 4 (26.7 percent) paid to watch content, highlighting the tremendous monetization potential this platform represents for content providers.”

So tablets will do more for enterprise hard drive and SSD demand in the cloud the more they continue to grow in adoption.  Then again, you could always create your own personal cloud with a 500GB Satellite drive an eliminate the middle man.

How much video do you watch on your smartphone or tablet?
