[Infographic]: Big data’s potential is… gigantic!

The word “Big” does not do “Big Data” justice.

The term “Big Data” has been thrown around, and depending on who you ask, there seems to be varying definitions.

Recently, 2 execs from EMC chimed in on how they defined Big Data, and the two could not be more different.  One says big data is all about select applications that require data sets that begin in the petabyte range and grow to multi-petabytes in scale. Applications like 3D movies, and MRIs.  The other believes big data is made up of  “data blocks that require a new storage architecture, either because of their size, performance constraints, distribution constraints, and/or presentation requirements.”

I say they are both right, but whatever the definition, one thing rings true: it’s a huge challenge, and with that a huge opportunity. Just consider some of the stats from this powerful infographic …

judging from this, Big Data is GIGANTIC.

When you hear Big Data, what do you think it means?

  1. […] We’re getting fat on data.  I liken it to fast food. We cannot get enough of it and the more we consume, the fatter we get.  If we were to compare “fast data” consumption to fast food consumption, I am sure we would see some similarities.  Consider that more than one-third of the US population is obese costing over $150 Billion in healthcare and productivity costs relative to absenteeism per year – due large in part to a poor diet (e.g. fast food) and a lack of exercise. Now, businesses cannot do anything about the available data diet since “fast data” is happening outside of our control. But, when it comes to exercise, if businesses fail to effectively make use of the fast data they are consuming, they too will get data fat and stand to lose billions of dollars. […]
