NAB 2017 Top Stories: Improving Creative Workflows, from Drones to Major Broadcast Production

Create, Collaborate, Produce, Archive — Seagate

If you didn’t get to attend NAB 2017, check this out — let’s run down the show’s highlights. We connected with all kinds of creators and Media & Entertainment (M&E) leaders, trading info about the wide variety ways Seagate and LaCie now help creative professionals “Focus on Your Vision.” We shared and showed off lots of new technologies that free you to do what you do, by enabling smarter workflows for brilliant results.

Thousands of our current and future partners who came by appreciated our demonstrations of the industry’s most advanced internal and external drives, systems, portable studios and more — tools that enable you to capture, edit, collaborate, manage, produce, archive and deliver your creative projects, your data. Here’s a fun walkthrough video to give an overview glimpse of what visitors saw at the Seagate and LaCie booth at the National Association of Broadcasters’ annual conference and show:

How do top creative pros manage their data workflow?

Eleven creative experts joined our Speaker Series to share stories and advice — you can see the whole list here. We heard from major brand photographer Jay P. Morgan, Bonnemaison Digital Media, IBM, Impact Creative, Adobe, Frame Linear, Psycho Films, Studio37 and more, on topics like multi-camera 4K production, video tools like Adobe After Effects, optimizing and mastering your creative workflow, and leveraging advanced interface technology advantages. Filmmaker Chris Hershman discussed his creative approach for filming music videos from concept through post edit, and Hershman also offered his 5 tips for turning photography and video into a career path.

Meanwhile between the Q&A sessions with the creative pros, we demonstrated creative workflow solutions from Seagate, LaCie, and with a number partners.

World’s first hard drive designed to make drone video easier to save

At the show we revealed the new Seagate DJI Fly Drive — the world’s first hard drive aimed at making life easier for drone photographers. Filmmaker Aaron Grimes talked about his workflow, getting beautiful shots from his drones, editing, and the challenges of managing and protecting his precious video footage. He showed visitors the new 2TB Fly Drive and how simple its built-in SD card reader makes it to protect up to 60 hours of footage in the field. Read more about the Seagate DJI Fly Drive here.

Take your studio with you — on location, anywhere you wish

Paddy Roa, Sling Media’s head of product development, joined us at the booth to launch their new SlingStudio product, which Paddy calls “a studio in a backpack.”

“You can take your studio to the middle of a baseball park, to the top of a mountain — anywhere you wish — and create a high-quality, professional grade, multi-camera production,” Paddy says. And it’s 100% cordless — no wires required, not for charging it, not for connecting cameras, or anything else.

SlingStudio can take 1080p video streams from multiple cameras, store them in a local storage device, and live broadcast them over YouTube and Facebook Live. “Because SlingStudio requires storage of high-speed video data,” Paddy says Sling Media found the ideal partner in LaCie. “Rugged storage products are an ideal companion for SlingStudio. They can be taken with SlingStudio anywhere, and create the best video production you want to create.”

What kind of NAS does your studio need?

We also had Rick Chouinard from Synology speaking at the booth, to show off Synology’s popular line of NAS boxes with Seagate IronWolf drives inside — from an entry-level 2-bay all the way up to an enterprise-level 12-bay that can be expanded up to 36 bays (which can provide up to 360TB of IronWolf goodness!).

Rick touts Synology’s decision to work with Seagate because our purpose-built IronWolf drives are designed for high-end network-attached storage systems, and because Seagate’s unique, Synology-exclusive IronWolf Health Management improves NAS system reliability with the industry’s most comprehensive embedded analysis and recovery software. Nick also loves IronWolf Pro’s included Rescue Data Recovery plan, also unique in the industry, which provides two years of free recovery service with every IronWolf Pro drive.

High-end broadcast and production multi-editor environments

For the biggest production houses, Seagate also shared the latest about our RealStor and ClusterStor Systems, technology that’s ideal for M&E enterprise multi-editor environments with a large amount of mixed and unpredictable workloads. These are the flexible and powerful solutions for applications like broadcast editing, high-end finishing, and post-production houses operating multiple edit suites and managing multiple data workflows, especially when many editors need quick and easy access to edit large amounts of data, often all at once.

Supercharge your creative workstation

Creative professionals who want to know how to supercharge their workstation’s data performance and capacity came by to check out our Guardian Series drives for PCs and workstations, the BarraCuda family including BarraCuda Pro and FireCuda flash-accelerated drives in both 3.5-inch desktop and 2.5-inch laptop forms.

In this video Nick Pandher from AMD’s Radeon Group teamed with us to show how to deliver exceptional creative workstation performance when working with Adobe Premiere Pro’s special effects features. The demo system featured the Radeon Pro WX7100 pro graphics GPU and the AMD Ryzen CPU architecture, and the Seagate BarraCuda Pro 10TB to deliver good I/O performance from the Ryzen chipset in conjunction with its huge 10 terabytes of fast 7200-rpm storage. Nick says it’s an ideal environment to do video editing across 2K HD and 4K resolutions.

A Videomaker Best of NAB award. And Thunderbolt 3 is 8X faster than USB 3.0

LaCie’s newest creative pro product — the LaCie 2big Dock — won a Videomaker magazine Best of NAB 2017 award!

And as a leader offering Thunderbolt 3, we wanted to team up with Intel at NAB 2017 to show the unique power and benefits of the industry’s most advanced interface, on the new 2big Dock product and several other LaCie units. In this video, Jason Ziller from Intel describes how Thunderbolt 3 is the fastest, most versatile connection to your computer and all your media devices. At 40Gbits/sec it’s 8X faster than USB 3.0, and it’s 2X faster than Thunderbolt 2. It’s also the most versatile, connecting to any kind of device, display, or docking station — so it’s everything you need for your video workflows. Adoption is taking off beyond the MacBook Pro with over 100 PCs now with the interface and 50 new devices coming to market this year.

So Jason showed our award-winning, newly released LaCie 2big Dock as the newest, greatest example of versatile connectivity and docking. He points out with Thunderbolt 3 you can already daisy chain all your Thunderbolt 3 devices, and with LaCie 2big Dock you can also connect many other data devices with its built-in SD and CompactFlash card slots for ingesting footage captured by drones or DSLR cameras and a USB 3.0 hub for charging and accessing a phone, connecting another drive or a digital camera to offload footage.

Like Jason says, LaCie 2bog Dock is “everything you need, to have this be the center of your workflow … in addition to having two hard drives — 20TB of embedded storage — built right into it.”
