New names, more game – bigger, faster, more affordable drives for enterprise and cloud data centers

.

Following our branded external drive brethren, we have decided to drop the catchy names like Savvio 10K, Constellation ES and stick to the basics:  Enterprise Performance, Enterprise Capacity. and the new Enterprise Value. Three drives we announced today, 1 receives a performance bump, 1 a capacity bump, and the other – an entirely new series focused on the cloud.

First thing, let’s set the record straight on the names. What was Savvio 10K, will now be referred to as Enterprise Performance 10K HDD, and what was Constellation ES, will now be Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDD.  The new comer to the portfolio:  Enterprise Value HDD, or what we were going to broadly refer to as Constellation CS.

Confused?  We’ll add more clarification on the naming strategy in an upcoming post.

Regardless of what we call these products, the bottom line:  you’re getting more.  More performance in the case of the Enterprise Performance 10K HDD – 21% faster than the previous generation.  More capacity in the case of the Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDD – now up to 4TB versus 3.  And, more affordability with Enterprise Value HDD. Priced lower than our Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDDs, these drives are ideal for bulk storage environments like cloud where customers demand enterprise capacity and reliability, without all of the bells and whistles of a traditional enterprise nearline product.

Cloud is getting to be a household name at Seagate.  Last month, we announced a Cloud Builder Alliance program and launched a new solutions section of Seagate.com focused on the cloud: www.seagate.com/solutions/cloud.  This month a new enterprise HDD targeting the bulk cloud storage space.  Then again, all three of the drives announced today target cloud.  Heck, the entire enterprise portfolio targets cloud drives for that matter. It just so happens that Enterprise Value was designed in response to direct feedback from cloud service provider customers.

So what’s next month’s cloud news from Seagate…sorry, not giving that away.

Read the Press Release.
