Innovators: developing and delivering new technologies

Top 100 global innovators 2015Thomson Reuters uses a series of proprietary patent-related metrics in assessing and identifying the most innovative global companies. The methodology is based on four criteria: overall patent volume; grant success rate; global reach; and patent portfolio influence as evidenced by citations by others.

“Seagate leads the industry in developing, delivering and protecting innovative technologies, and it’s gratifying to be recognized for that leadership,” said Bob Pechman, chief intellectual property counsel at Seagate.

Seagate has amassed more than 420 patents to date in calendar year 2015, up from 400 last year.

Asia led the world with 44 Top Global Innovators, followed by 36 from North America and 20 from Europe. Just two countries account for 75 percent of the companies on this year’s list—Japan and the U.S. Twelve companies come from the semiconductor industry, down 43 percent from last year, with another 12 from the chemical sector, which doubled its representation from last year. The automotive sector and media Internet search and navigation sector also saw big year-over-year gains.

“The Top 100 Global Innovators are the organizations leading us into the future, by innovating, protecting their inventions with IP rights and commercializing them,” said Thomson Reuters in its report. “Without them, our world would be a very different place.”
