Consumers have gotten themselves into a bit of a pickle. PCs, cameras and DVRs have brought them painlessly into the wonderful world of digital content without them even knowing it. And here they sit, with PCs chock full of stuff they really, really care about – without a clue how to keep it safe.
Actually, they have a clue. It’s not that hard to backup a PC. But the same could be said about eating well and exercising. The sad fact is that whatever the excuse, most of us don’t have backups for all of our precious digital photos, movies and documents.
For years, companies have tried to coax people into changing their habits. “You really should!” “It’s not that hard!” “We’ve made it easy!”
Seagate’s taking a new approach with the new Replica backup device. Instead of “one touch”, how about “no touch”?
Rather than make backup easier, Replica makes it automatic. Plug it in (one wire!), and your data will exist in not one, but two places.
As of this writing, Replica still can’t help you with that exercise thing.
This Replica concept is exactly what many of us PC people have been waiting for. I will be looking for this device ASAP at my local electronics store. I have read a few reviews on Replica however none of them mentioned the user experience / interface in terms of retrieving any given single or multiple file(s) from said device. I hope it is as easy as point and click. In addition, what about the quality of the Replica HDD itself? what is it’s MTBF rate? Is it your standard approximately 10,000 hours? Or is it more like the Apple Time Machine with a sever quality HDD. After all, what good is a back-up device if it does not provide long-term protection?
Replica’s drives are good quality, the same you’d expect from Seagate desktop PC drives. MTBF is in the hundreds of thousands of hours for these drives.
I have a MacBook Pro with Windows XP SP2 on Boot Camp. Can Replica works on Boot Camp for Mac? I just want to backup the whole Boot Camp partition on Mac.
Replica will work on the Windows boot camp portion of the Mac. It will NOT work with Mac OS.
