Seagate’s new Fremont facility was featured last week in a CNBC news segment that focused on the growing importance of rainwater harvesting for businesses and individuals in drought-stricken California.

Seagate’s Steve Deason, executive director, RMO facilities, was interviewed by CNBC’s Megan Hawkins.

CNBC provides business news and information to approximately 386 million homes worldwide, including more than 100 million in the U.S. and Canada.

The 411,000-square-foot Fremont Research Center (FRC), located on Kato Road next to Interstate 880, is in a relatively arid region of California, which has been hit by a multi-year drought. To ensure long-term and sustainable R&D operations, Seagate has focused on state-of-the-art sustainable water management to reduce water use and harvest rainwater, as well as a comprehensive system to reclaim and reuse water discharged from cleaning process tools and other industrial water streams.

This reclaimed water is already being used on-site for a variety of purposes (other than drinking)—reducing costs and lowering our environmental footprint. Watch this YouTube clip to learn more.

The FRC team also is in the process of working to achieve silver-level LEED certification—a major accomplishment for any building, but even more so for a manufacturing facility. In keeping with modern and sustainable principles of design, the building has been updated to harvest daylight for office use and avoid discharge of any industrial water.

The building also utilizes a 1 megawatt photovoltaic (solar power) system located on its expansive rooftop. At peak production, this photovoltaic system alone will serve approximately 20 percent-to-25 percent of the building’s electrical power demand.

Sustainability is a key guiding principle at Seagate. Seagate’s committed to building long-term value through the balance of corporate goals with the company’s impact on society and the environment.
