So far, GoFlex Home exceeds my expectations

Last week, I posted the top 5 reasons for getting a GoFlex Home for me.  Here is a rundown of my experience thus far.

1. Can act as my iTunes server
2. Accessibility from my iPhone
3. Sets up in < 5 minutes (YES – literally, it took me five minutes)
4. Works with my Mac and Windows PC (YES – talk about seamless integration)
5. Automatic backup via my wireless network (YES – the first backup took some time, but now peace of mind has set in)

Okay, so I did this backwards…call it convenience to tackle #3, 4, and 5 before I tackle my major wants #1 and 2.

With respect to #1 – setting the GoFlex Home up as my iTunes server, I am currently looking into inexpensive wireless whole home audio solutions where I can stream music from the GoFlex Home to 3+ rooms in the house. Multi-channel would be ideal, so I don’t have to listen to my kids music, and they don’t have to listen to mine.  Any suggestions?  I also am waiting to get my hands on a GoFlex TV product to bring that content to the family room.  Finally saying goodbye to my Linksys Media Center Extender (yes I still run Windows XP Media Center).

With respect to #2 – Accessibility from my iPhone, it comes down to me upgrading to Memeo’s premium service to get mobile access, and I just have not done this yet…but I will.

Thus far – GoFlex Home is all it’s lived up to be from an ease of use and backup scenario. Now the real fun starts, once I get my ducks in a row.

Let me know on that whole home audio solution…if you have any recommendations…thanks!

To stream music to an iPhone, you say it requires a certain level of Memeo service. Is Memeo something that works on Macs? We’re all Macs at my home and would love to have this ability. If so, which level of service is this (what is it called)? I see stuff on Memeo’s site about sharing photos and videos but not music.

One other question i had you may be able to answer: does it also cost money to enable sharing certain files or folders remotely? I have family in 5 states and would love to be able to give them all access to a folder of family photos and videos.

@erikeric Thanks for commenting…the remote access via iPhone is available by upgrading to Memeo Pro which is $19.99. The interface is via Seagateshare.com. I upgraded and set a shortcut on my iPhone to Seagateshare.com…it works great. With respect to sharing content with your family on your GoFlex Home, you can share your photos with as many family members as you want by creating a “share” on the Seagateshare dashboard. All you need is an email address for those you want to share with. You can also grant rights to download content, and create a passwords for security, and it comes standard with GoFlex Home.

Thanks Mark, I’m thinking this would be a great solution. Sure it doesn’t have the features of a Drobo but it also doesn’t have the cost either. Does what I want (although straight uP FTP access would be perfect).

Sorry, one other question: is there a place where the supported video formats are listed? If streaming to an iPad on the same network aa the device itself, does that involve pure streaming or transcoding on the fly instead?

Absolutely the worst piece of software I have installed. It made the computer unuseably SLOW and took-up most of the resources of the computer (800+ Mhz AMD64 w/ 2 GB ram). It took over 15 minutes after powerup for it to even recognize the backups it had already made. Backups never seemed to complete. Support was sarcastic, if you even got any. They were not interested in talking/corresponding with you if you did not purchase additional products.

The drive software/firmware is pathetic. You can manually turn the light on and off with the test software, but it will NOT illuminate to show drive activity. As bad as I thought WD was, switching to Seagate was the wrong decision!
