SSD, HDD, SSHD…it’s an acronymic love fest when it comes to storage

.

When it comes to hard drives, SSDs, or Solid State Hybrid Drives for consumer data storage, it’s all good.

If you haven’t already, check out this post on Forbes by Tom Coughlin titled “Digital Storage Needs the Right Stuff.”

“…Although there are some markets where flash memory is having an impact on hard disk drives, in many other cases there is a synergy in having both types of storage as part of storage architecture.  As we approach the general availability of ultrabooks with the Windows 8 operating system it looks like the largest sales for ultra-thin computers will include a hard disk drive as well as flash memory.” – Tom Coughlin via @Forbes

Tom’s post covers much of what Seagate’s Jeff Burke (VP of Market Research & Strategy) said at this year’s Flash Memory Summit. Jeff blew away the audience in his keynote with statistics like these:

  • “Information makes up about 49% of an organization’s total value.”
  • “Businesses are storing 2.2 Zettabytes of information.”
  • “Data creation doubles every two years with one gigabyte of stored data creating a petabyte of transient data.”
  • “The installed base of HDD storage capacity is growing at a 57% cumulative annual growth rate.”
  • “Flash memory unit growth will be 42% from 2011 to 2012.”
  • “Flash memory capacity growth will be 90% from 2011 to 2012.”
  • “Enterprise HDDs will grow 25% in units and 83% in storage capacity from 2011 to 2012.”
  • “Over 60% of storage capacity is expected to be in cloud applications by 2020, versus about 25% today.”
  • “The number of storage products in client systems will double between 2010 and 2020.”
  • “SSDs will be in 80% of all commercial and 20% of all consumer desktop and notebooks.”
  • “This will require 105 Exabytes of flash memory by 2020 but the total storage demand for computers will require more HDD units than SSDs.”

Just some eye opening numbers to consider.
