The cheaper storage is, the more it will be consumed…

Quote of the day:  “We want God in a box for a dollar and the dollar is negotiable!

This one was c/o our friend Mikey Butler, Vice President Research & Development, IaaS, at EVault in his latest post, “EVault at OpenStack Summit.”

If you haven’t read his post yet, I highly recommend it.  It summarizes the world in which we live – one defined by content and information and our insatiable appetite for more of it.  Mikey shares his findings since joining EVault’s OpenStorage team this past October:

  1. The cheaper storage is, the more it will be consumed.
  2. …Extrapolation of storage consumption data suggests that if storage were absolutely free the world would consume an infinite amount.
  3. The digital data tsunami will asymptotically approach infinity over time and therefore storage cost must asymptotically approach zero over time
  4. The world’s appetite for data is unbound, so our storage costs will always need to decrease. The daughter of our Principal Architect captured this lemma perfectly when she said,  “We want God in a box for a dollar and the dollar is negotiable!”
  5. Long-term digital asset preservation is predominately an exercise in ongoing, long-term storage cost reduction.

Check it out.
