Seagate talks with CNBC — Safe and Speedy Storage

“Why do I need a hard disk drive, when I have the cloud?”

Our SVP and Chief Technology Officer Mark Re spoke to CNBC on Thursday about the role of hard disk drives in a world where many consumers and businesses are increasingly using cloud storage.

“The cloud is made up of hard drives, so (HDDs) are still an integral part of the storage infrastructure,” Re said. “If you’re a corporation, you might want to keep more sensitive data on premise. As a consumer, you might like to keep a lot of your pictures as a backup or keep some of your more sensitive data within your house.”

The Cloud is made of hard drives — and it’s just one of the storage resources we need

The cloud is convenient, but sometimes “there might be bandwidth or connectivity issues, and that’s where you might want to have more local storage,” Re said, particularly when it comes to content creation involving large digital files.

“For very large infrastructures, whether it’s oil and gas exploration, medical research, weather reporting or financial analysis, you might like to have some of that computing and storage close by, for speed, easy access and security,” Re added.

Hard Drives, Solid States Drives, SSHD — all of the above

He also discussed the benefits of HDDs and flash drives, noting that Seagate provides both solutions, along with solid-state hybrid drives, which offer the best of both technologies.

“Flash is great when you want quick access (to data),” Re said. “It’s also great in the client space for lower-power applications. Seagate created the hybrid drive, and we’ve been a leader in this area. It combines the fast speed and power savings that you get with flash storage, with the high capacity, low cost and reliability of a hard drive. We find that to be a very compelling offer, and I think we can see that moving into other kinds of data storage, like the cloud.”
