We needed Amazon to affirm SSD is good for cloud?

This post on Wired’s Cloudline made me ask that question…

In the post is this quote…“We asked at Cloudline if flash drives were the way forward in the cloud with sold-state drives (SSDs) making economic sense despite their higher price tags. Now the cloud giant Amazon has answered in the affirmative, announcing in a blog post on Wednesday that its Elastic Compute Cloud, or EC2, now offers virtual machines backed by speedier SSDs.”

Really – we were second guessing the value of SSD’s in the cloud? It seems all I have read over the past couple years on storage relative to the cloud is that SSD’s are the ideal solution and that cloud providers all over the world are moving to SSD in droves. I guess that was all marketing speak driven through the mouths of analysts and media on the pro-SSD bandwagon, and it wasn’t real until the almighty Amazon “affirmed” the case just last week. Okay, all sarcasm in the name of fun aside…this is great news because you know what?

The more SSDs deployed in the cloud…
the faster data (in all its glorious forms) flows…
and the faster data flows…
the more data is created…
and the more data is created…
the more data needs to be stored…
and the more data there is to be stored…
the more hard drives will be needed…
and the more hard drives that will be needed…
the better!

And it’s great news in so many ways. Seagate’s not just a hard drive company anymore The Pulsar product line, the strategic relationship with Samsung and NAND supply, the newly formed alliance with DensBits…Seagate is serious about SSD, and continues to evolve its product line and technology lead in the enterprise space.

The way I see it, this news is a win-win-win-win … greater penetration of SSD in the cloud + more hard drives + new opportunities for our solution-provider partners + we all enjoy faster data production and access in the cloud.
