What holds 320GB of your stuff yet is thinner than an Oreo cookie?

What do the following things have in common?

  • A typical wallet
  • Oreo cookie
  • The iPhone 4

They are all bulkier than the new GoFlex Slim Seagate announced today.

This new 320GB external drive boasts a depth of only 9mm.  A typical wallet that you carry in your pocket is anywhere from 12mm  to 20mm. Your standard Oreo cookie is 11mm, and the iPhone 4 is 9.3mm.  Okay, you don’t necessarily carry Oreo cookies in your pocket (maybe you do), but a wallet and an iPhone (or any phone for that matter), you definitely do.  The portability of such necessities is crucial. The same is true for storage.  My first external drive I built myself using an old laptop drive and a 3rd party USB enclosure was a good 25 to 30mm in thickness.  I could not imagine carrying that around, but this new GoFlex Slim I could.

Okay, maybe you don’t always carry hard drives around in your pocket, but you do in your laptop bag, or perhaps your purse, and we all can agree available real estate is valuable. The thinner the better to not only lighten the load, but perhaps increase the flexibility to carry more.  Maybe you’re a photographer, videographer, or musician and you carry multiple drives cataloged by shoot. Or maybe you’re an architect or graphic artist and you carry multiple drives organized by specific client, project, or portfolio.  Or maybe, if you are anal like me, you have a drive for photos, one for music, and one for video, and maybe one for each member of the family.

However you use storage, added portability is a win-win.

Oh – and they’re fast (USB 3.0 interface, 7200RPM drive) and they’ll be a Mac version too!

Sold! I’ll take 3.
