What’s really exciting about Razer’s “true gaming laptop”

Who said the PC was dead?

Not a company called Razer that’s for sure. Just last week they announced what they are calling “the world’s first true gaming laptop”.  Now some like Aleinware, Asus, etc. might disagree with this statement, but when you look at how Razer is defining, or should I say redefining, the gaming laptop, then they might have some credence here.

I’m not about to go into all of the speeds and feeds on this thing. Engadget already provides a great look here.

In the era of tablets and the cries that the PC era is over, the PC is dead, I find it refreshing and exciting to see companies like Razer step up to the plate and deliver a truly innovative PC. Take for instance the LCD trackpad to the right of the keyboard. Gamers can utilize it as another input device or as a screen for more in-game info. What surprised me about this unit is that it does not include an SSD drive. To be honest, when I first read the headline, I immediately though it must have an SSD drive for storage. Razor instead chose to go with a 320GB 7200RPM hard drive, and given the laptop is only 8mm thick, it must be a 7mm slim hard drive. I guess hard drives still provide enough performance for this “true gaming laptop” to provide the experience intended.

Storage aside, what Razer has done is breathe excitement into the high performance PC world.  Let’s face it. For the past year it seems that all we hear about is tablets, SSD, and the cloud, and without fault. The PC industry has done little to reinvent itself.  There haven’t been any major game changing products from the likes of Intel, Microsoft, AMD etc that we have experienced in the past that have provided the surge in PC demand. Windows 7 proved to have modest adoption.  Intel Ultrabooks are just getting going.  So a company like Razer took matters into their own hands and created a product unlike any other in the laptop space.  They innovated, and that’s what’s most exciting.

After all, it’s innovative ideas and the determination to see your ideas come to fruition that will get us through these times. Apple has proven that model works as long as you create something people want, even if they don’t realize it yet.

Where would you like to see more innovation in the PC?
