25 Years of Metal Gear Solid

I remember playing the first Metal Gear game like it was, well, 25 years ago. (1987 if you really want to do the math. And yes, technically it’s 26 years, but blame Konami.)  It’s been a long time since Solid Snake has made his debut setting the bar for the tactical/stealth genre giving birth to other games such as Sypon Filter and Splinter Cell®.

Over the course of those 25 years, there have been several iterations of the series, including spin-offs, available on game consoles including the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Nintendo GameCube Nintendo Game Boy Color, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation®, PlayStation®2, PlayStation®3, PlayStation® Portable, Xbox® Xbox®360, and PC.

Taking the franchise even further, IDW Publications has developed numerous comic books covering the storylines from Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty introducing the character to new audiences.

To celebrate 25 years of making the world safe for democracy against big robots and secret cabals, Konami is releasing Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection available now as a PlayStation®3 exclusive. This set will include all eight of the main Metal Gear games, two motion comics and an art book showcasing creator Hideo Kojima’s inspiration and, well, legacy for this amazing series.
