When you think of SXSW Interactive, you think technology, apps and of course, gaming. Screenburn (which was just announced to have a name change for 2013 to SXSW Gaming) is a perfect event to get your pixel on and hang out looking at some of the upcoming games for PC, PlayStation® 3 and Xbox 360™.
If you’ve ever been to a gaming convention such as the Penny Arcade Expo or even the games section of San Diego Comic Con, Screenburn will look very familiar to you. Booth after booth of setup game stations where you’ll hear the “Pew! Pew! Pew!” of gunfire when not squinting from camera flashes of someone posing with the nearest cosplay model. Having been to these types of shows once or twice in my past life, I knew exactly what to expect…and what I look for.
Spot On Games is doing something interesting in the geo-location check-in space making trivia games fun and portable. Play alone, with friends or on-the-go with any other Spot On player and see who’s got the big brain. Download it free for iPhone or Android.
Sticking with the theme of location based gaming, Borglar was described to me as “Mario Bros meets Groupon” and after a brief demo, the connection made sense. Play through your mobile device for a chance to win free prizes and augment your reality.
Sticking with the trivia theme, Steel Penny Games has an interesting Facebook title called Trivia Adventure which has nice elements reminiscent of Mario Party, Diablo and Trivial Pursuit all rolled into a sharply animated Facebook experience. You won’t have to have the IQ of a rocket scientist to play, but it could help.
In the back of the convention center was a stage for panels. Some of the panels taking place included presentations by Marvel Comics, Bioware and Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Call of Duty® Elite.
Overall, it was a great way to kick off the Interactive portion of SXSW. If you’re a fan of gaming, and looking for something different at SXSW, you should make time for this experience.
