ComiXology – Doing Their Part to “Viva la Nerdolution!”

I’ve been a fan of comics for as long as I can remember. Over the course of the years, I’ve added some great finds to my collection including Amazing Spider-Man #299 (1st Venom) Uncanny X-Men Annual #10 (1st Rogue) and countless others showcasing epic battles, first appearances, character deaths and more.

But I threw it all away…to go digital.

While I love technology and the conveniences it provides, the reason for going digital was a simple one – closet space…or a lack thereof.  When you buy as many books as I do, you need someplace to put them. When it became clear that my finite living quarters weren’t like the endless space of the Negative Zone, I needed another option.

Over the last few months, I’ve completely transitioned to digital comics reading all my favorites from publishers like Marvel, DC, Image and more through their respective smartphone/tablet apps or ComiXology – a great app that includes all major publishers.

According to this article from the NY Times, digital sales have been a very successful way for publishers to reach new fans and give sales a boost.  Making comic purchases easy and accessible giving you the ability to buy new books on release day and have instant access to your library from the bedroom to the bathroom.

Having used the service for a while now, I love how easy this is, but do wish there was some type of checkbox feature to buy multiple books simultaneously versus one-by-one. But this is just a minor inconvenience.

There was a time where being a nerd and reading comics wasn’t cool. It’s amusing how things have changed where pop culture has initiated a cultural shift through games, clothes, books, television shows and movies all centered around what has become “American Mythology.”

So as another friend likes to say, “Viva la Nerdolution!”
