Day Two of PAX East 2012

The second day of PAX East had as much energy as the first if not more. While Saturday’s tend to be the most heavy for a show like this, the crowed seemed pretty on par with the previous day.  Today was a chance to scout the floor out a bit to see titles that caught my eye yesterday.

Orcs Must Die 2 is the sequel (obviously) to the original title that released on PC and Xbox LIVE Arcade last year from Robot Entertainment.  The original game was a fun romp where you play a member of The Order and must stop the onslaught of Orcs and Ogres from entering The Rift that will allow the mob of unsavory characters to plunder and pillage other worlds in the realm.

Coming this summer for digital download only on the PC, this title will feature more enemies, more defenses, a new upgrade system and most importantly – a partner.  Finally you’ll be able to pair up with a friend and ensure that the Orcs do indeed die.  As a huge fan of the first OMD game, I’ll definitely be looking forward to the sequel.

Aliens™: Colonial Marines is a game which is the direct sequel to the movie Aliens. I was a huge fan of the film and the game looks great. Sega contracted famed artist and designer Syd Mead who was responsible for the main ship in the film to design additional interiors for the ship in the game for areas that were never caught on film. Fans of the movies will love looking for a number of Easter eggs throughout the level that pay homage to this sci-fi classic.

This first-person shooter will be available for all major consoles this fall packs all the suspense and intensity of the film. Remember, “In space, no one can hear you scream.”

Taking a pause from the gaming action, I attended a panel called Nerdcore Hip Hop.  This was a very interesting panel moderated by Raheem Jarbo, Kyle Murdock and Damien Hess discussing the correlation between hip hop music and video games.  If you’re like me and had never heard of the Nerdcore genre before, its just like regular hip hop music, but they lyrics tend to center around things that are considered, well, “nerdy”, such as video games, comic books or for some people – Firefly. (Don’t get mad, I loved the show too.)  The panel was very informative talking about the origins of Nerdcore music as well as where it’s going. While I wouldn’t consider them to be in the Nerdcore genre, videos from the group Broken Pixels may help to break the stereotype for those that are.

That’s all for now.  With two days down and one to go, be on the lookout for more info coming from the show. Didn’t attend PAX East? Be sure to check out pictures of the show on our Flickr and Facebook portals. Comments are always welcome below, on Twitter or Facebook.
