Finally a Glare That Won’t Hurt Your Eyes

Charming.

If I had to describe the upcoming game, Glare, by Phobic Studios, that’s the word I’d use.  Coming this October for Mac (yay), Linux and Windows, Glare is a side-scrolling platform/adventure game that once you pick it up, you won’t want to put it down.  That’s what happened to me at the recent PAX Prime event.

You play the Shiner, a being made entirely of light, who uses his Glare ability to clear away the darkness of the world – brilliance simplified.  The controls are smooth and fluid and each section of the game teaches you different gameplay elements including using your ability, jumping, double-jumping, weapon management, etc.

The environments are captivating and really encourage the player to explore different nooks and crannies as some sections are blocked off until you solve a puzzle or acquire a new weapon/ability that will give you access.  With six worlds to explore, this won’t be a game you’ll want to rush through. Speaking of the world, while playing the game you’ll notice a sense of “revolution” as you progress through environments as the world is indeed “spinning” as you play.  It’s subtle, but does add to the overall experience in a new, unique way.

Another element of the game that’s subtle enough to not distract, but does a good job adding to the experience is the music. Light, playful and a perfect addition to the game, the music is an original soundtrack developed by the Phobic team that will also provide hints if something is about to happen or as enemies approach.

I can’t hide (and won’t even try to) how into this game I was. Great for all ages, Glare is a game that will burn bright but won’t require you to wear shades.
