Is the Video Game Console Dying?

As a gamer, I’ve been able to witness the evolution of gaming consoles. The idea of playing video games on your box was the primary driver behind the development of the system. Yet with the advent of apps, Sony and Microsoft have begun to capitalize on this with the inclusion for apps for Netflix, Hulu, Last FM and others allow for the game console to become a mass-market multimedia device.

Anytime I log onto my Xbox LIVE account, a good portion of my friends are watching TV, movies or playing music – very few are actually gaming.

Nintendo has done it’s best to remain true to it’s lineage and while you can watch some degree of content on that system, it remains a gaming platform first and foremost.

Next generation systems are waiting in the wings so it’ll be really interesting to watch the priority that video games are given on these platforms.
