My Top 5 Robin Williams Movies

“No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.” – John Keating – Dead Poets Society

Robin Williams was amazing. He had such an incredible body of work that to list them all would take more space than this blog would allow. So instead, let me touch on some of my favorites.

Mork & Mindy – While this isn’t a movie, this was probably the first introduction for a lot of people to Robin Williams. Well, maybe those who didn’t watch the show Mork & Mindy spun out of, Happy Days. I remember the first time I saw Mork vs. Fonzi and I was immediately hooked. Then when I learned the awesome alien who flew in an egg was getting his own series, I couldn’t wait. It was 30 minutes of crazy bliss and something I’ll never forget.

Popeye – I love this film even now and introduced it to my son a year or two ago. It was silly and goofy but such a great take on the iconic cartoon that it literally had me eating more spinach. Hollywood has never done another film since and I hope it’s because nothing can top Robin Williams’ performance as America’s favorite sailor.

Aladdin – If there was one thing that may have pushed Robin Williams beyond superstar status, it’s playing the role of a Genie. Quotable, lovable, hysterical, incredible – you’ve never had a friend like that.

Dead Poets Society – What I loved about his role here is how different it was from other roles before.  We’d seen Robin Williams play the funny guy, but this was such a heavy transition that I think gave another dimension to his acting that helped roles like Patch Adams and Good Will Hunting so enjoyable.

Good Morning Vietnam – A perfect blend of comedic timing with dramatic flair, there are very few who I think could have played the role of Adrian Cronauer so well.  It’s a classic film with a top-notch cast.

Picking only five roles was difficult. Robin Williams has been a favorite actor of mine since I was young (er). He was amazingly talented and while he was public about some of the challenges life presented, I’d rather focus on how he lived than dwell on how he died.  The stars of Hollywood will feel a bit dim because one of the brightest is no longer shining.

Rest in peace, Robin Williams, you won’t be forgotten.
