Preserving Rare Art in China’s Mogao Grottoes

The Mogao Grottoes is a series of caves that form a system of 492 temples at an oasis strategically located at a religious and cultural crossroads on the Silk Road, in Gansu Province, China. The Grottoes are a world-class cultural heritage site and a man-made wonder, containing some of the finest examples of Buddhist art spanning 1,000 years from the 4th century A.D. onwards. Seagate is playing a key role in conserving these stunning works of art.

Dunhuang Grottoes Digitization Protection Program

Dunhuang Research Academy is responsible for the conservation, management and research of the Mogao Grottoes, also known as the Thousand Buddha Grottoes. To make the important artworks accessible while conserving the delicate grotto environment, the Academy is taking video and photographs for digital archiving with the help of Seagate’s Enterprise Capacity HDD and Backup Plus external hard drives.

With Seagate’s support, the artwork in at least two caves in the complex will be digitally preserved for generations to come. See some of this priceless and beautiful art below:
