SXSW – A Festival for Music, Film, Technology, Gaming and…Comics?

If you’re like me (and reading this validates you are) you’ve been paying attention to all the news coming out of South by Southwest® about movies, music or some of the tech innovations like the Google Shoe.

But there’s some interesting tidbits that started coming out of SXSW Gaming, which interestingly enough weren’t even gaming related, but centered in the world of comic books.

Marvel Entertainment is on hand at SXSW again this year and is making some interesting developments in the digital publishing space.

The company announced their Marvel AR app for iOS/Android last year at the show which like the behind-the-scenes content for DVD’s, gives similar content for comic books that really bring the art to life with contextual interviews or pencil/ink work showcasing the work of the artist.

This year they are taking things to the next level with Project Gamma that is being described as:

“An adaptive audio experience, Project Gamma dynamically tailors itself to both the events in the comic and the individual reader’s behavior, no matter the time invested in each page and to each issue. In short, with this new technology each reading experience becomes unique to itself.”

For me, this is a great solution so I don’t have to sing O Fortuna during epic battle sequences.  I’m excited to see this feature launched.

Marvel is also delving deeper into the realm of original entertainment with their upcoming program Marvel Original Video.  Hosted by one of the connoisseur’s of comics, Blair Butler, this show will “focus on everything from behind-the-scenes looks at the inner workings of Marvel to reality programming, news and documentaries.”

Marvel Entertainment has really taken charge of their properties over the years extending what is a strong foundation in comics to film, television and now the digital frontier. Check out all other news from the Marvel camp while at SXSW on their official site.

Excelsior!
