Tech Press Lauds “Buzzworthy” New Seagate Products at CES

When journalists sprinkle their stories with adjectives like “thin,” “elegant” and “stylish,” you might think they’re covering a fashion show in New York or Paris. But this week is all about the big Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where those words apply equally well to the latest tech gadgets.

Seagate is getting lots of press buzz at CES, thanks to a new line of svelte and sleek storage products. More than 50 stories have appeared since Tuesday’s product announcements.

Here’s a roundup of what technology journalists are saying about our latest external-storage solutions. Click on the links to read the full stories.

Backup Plus Ultra Slim

Gizmodo: “Seagate’s Backup Plus Slim is one of the best portable drives you can buy because it perfectly balances size, capacity and price. Now there’s even more reason to opt for Seagate’s portable storage offerings because its new Backup Plus Ultra Slim is 2.5 millimeters thinner.”

Tom’s Hardware: “Seagate’s new Backup Plus Ultra Slim reduces the thickness (Z-height) of its 1 and 2TB enclosures to a mere 9.6 mm. The new Seagate 5,400 RPM Mobile 2TB HDD with a 7mm Z-height is nestled inside the enclosure, and is the key technological advance that enabled the thinner enclosure. Seagate managed to pack up to two platters into the thin drive and coupled them with its SMR (shingled-magnetic recording) technology, which is a first for the 2.5-inch HDD segment.”

LaCie Chromé

PC World: “Luxury, thy name is LaCie Chromé —and you’re easily one of the fastest portable hard drives in the world. Everything about this drive absolutely screams excess, in the most glorious way possible. Standing tall and clad in mirrored, uh, chrome, the LaCie Chromé demands to be ogled, more closely resembling a trophy or work of modern art than a typical hard drive.”

Tech Times: “Shaped like a shiny, sleek brick emerging graciously from a round base, the (LaCie Chromé) is a beast under its elegant metallic sheets. It bundles two internal 512 GB SATA M.2 solid-state drives in a RAID 0 configuration. This means that not only do you get 1TB of memory, but more importantly, writing and reading speeds are lightning fast.”

SlashGear: “LaCie, the external storage maker known for its extravagant hard drive creations, has unveiled its latest artistic creation: the Chromé. The desktop sculpture is encased in hand-polished chromed zinc, has 1TB of storage and features its own dock that uses magnets to hold the drive upright. Extravagance aside, the LaCie Chromé does have some impressive specs.”

LaCie Porsche Design

Engadget: “As USB-C arrives on more machines, accessory makers will need to update their products accordingly. That’s just what LaCie has done for CES with its latest Porsche Design Desktop and Mobile hard drives. The aluminum-wrapped storage units now offer USB Type-C connections to your laptop or desktop. What’s more, you can still charge your laptop while you’re transferring files, so long as the drive is plugged in.”

TweakTown: “Seagate came out batting quite hard at CES and Storage Visions 2016, with an impressive new external HDD, thanks to its acquisition of LaCie. Seagate and LaCie showed off a huge 8TB external HDD powered by USB-C, so if you have USB-C on your PC or Mac, you can enjoy the new connectivity standard. The new LaCie Porsche Design external HDDs come in 4TB, 5TB and 8TB capacities, for all data needs—be it backups of your important data, photos, business files or even your Steam directory.”

PC Magazine: “CES is a hotbed of buzzworthy products. For the storage enthusiasts, LaCie and its parent company Seagate are adding more devices to their teeming stable, including Porsche Design drives. LaCie is going big with USB-C, adding the new port to a whole lineup of Porsche Design drives. They come with USB-C to USB Type-A adapters, but are primarily made to be used with desktops and laptops that already have USB-C ports.”
