The IAWTV Awards at CES

It’s no secret to anyone who’s been reading this blog that I watch a lot of television. I’ve been a huge fan of shows like Mad Men, Arrow, American Horror Story and more. But based on the excitement for the International Academy of Web TV Awards emanating from celebrities and creative teams present at the event, I’ve really been missing out on some quality programming.

I remember when Revision3 first started with its 5-6 shows and there were a couple I watched. But having this discussion with a friend recently, I was ordered to “watch less cable and watch more web programs as many are superior in quality.” (I’m probably paraphrasing this, but it’s how I heard it.)

There was a definite anticipation in the air as I walked into the Palazzo Theatre last night. Various stars of hit web shows such as What’s Trending, The Jeff Lewis 5-Minute Comedy Hour or a long-time favorite in the gaming circle, Red vs. Blue mixed and mingled with one another until it was time for the show to start and the first winners to be announced.

Ethan Newberry, who I’m familiar with from the show by NODE Studios, Tagged, did a really good job as the MC of the event, or what they called, “the voice of God”. But once the opening skit kicked off we jumped right into the awards.

I won’t list out all the categories for you. Go ahead and visit the IAWTV site to get the winners list.

But suffice to say, some the IAWTV Awards gave me a new appreciation for the creative spirit and the technical savvy of those who put their blood, sweat and tears into making online programming.  It was also great to see some of the “Internet Elite” including Felisha Day, Chris Hardwick – founder of The Nerdist, Justine Ezarik, Sean Becker and countless others.

This new exposure has piqued my interest to take a look at what looks like some great content ranging from comedy, to drama to documentaries.  If you’re looking for a change of pace from regular cable with a heavy dose of creative spirit, then look no further than your Internet. Great entertainment is just a mouse-click away.
