The Social Media Battle of the Sexes – Infographic

The rise of social media has been steady since really taking off towards the end of the last decade. It has become so integrated into our culture, it’s commonplace to see hashtag overlays on television shows, movies with their own Twitter accounts and celebrities with a blue “verified” check on their pages.

In days of yore, when you saw someone walking down the street or in a coffee shop with their face glued to their phone, it was safe to assume they were diligently working and sending email. Today, it’s more likely that person is sending a tweet, reading a Facebook status or uploading a photo to Instagram. It’s important enough where Seagate has even added a feature for our Backup Plus external hard drives where you can download your photos from sites like Facebook an Flickr. This allows you to have a backup of your online social life, just in case.

Social media has become prevalent for young, old, male, female and in some cases – animal. But when breaking it down specifically to a “battle of the sexes,” who’s more active on Social Media – Men or Women?

The infographic below courtesy of QuickSprout reveals all – do the results surprise you?  Look at some of these stats:

  • Women have 55% more posts on their Facebook walls than men
  • 69% of people who play games on Facebook are women
  • 20% of Instagram users are women
  • On Instagram, 78% of Monster Energy followers and 76% of Red Bull followers are men

But when it comes to sites like LinkedIn and Google+, men dominate  — 24% of all male Internet users frequent LinkedIn and 64% of all male Internet users have G+ accounts. Men also spend much more time on YouTube. 54% of YouTube’s audience is men, and the spend at least one hour a week watching videos, versus women who spend approximately thirty-five minutes weekly.

When you think about your social networks and whom you see as being the most active, you may look at the graphic below, shrug your shoulders and think, “Seems legit.”  But isn’t there part of you that wants to skew the info by sharing this on your Facebook page?
