Forbes magazine this week put Seagate’s new Innov8 external desktop hard drive through its paces in a new video review.
The 3.5-inch drive features a groundbreaking new technology, Ignition Boost. Combined with USB 3.1 technology, Ignition Boost eliminates the need for a power adapter. The 8TB drive is available later this month for $349.
“You only need one USB 3.1 cable to power this device, which is pretty cool for an external, high-capacity storage drive,” says Forbes contributor Antony Leather.
In testing the drive’s performance, Leather notes a read speed of more than 200MB/second. “Overall, this is a really, really fast drive,” he says. “It’s not SSD-fast, but then again, you’re going to be paying a lot more for an equivalent-size SSD, if they even exist.”
Also scoring points with Forbes was the Innov8’s premium design, which features an all-aluminum enclosure. “This is an absolutely gorgeous device,” Leather says. “It’s got a textured finish, with bare metal edges. It would look great sitting on your desk. I’m really impressed with the build quality.”
