Video Games to Watch in 2013

I don’t know about you, but I already barely remember the holidays.  It’s already the middle of January, and I’ve been looking forward for things I’m excited about this year like getting a Smart TV, maybe finally breaking my no tablet rule, and any news about the pending console transition.

But before we can put money down for an “Xbox 720” or “PlayStation4”, there are a few games that are coming out this year that are sure to scratch your itch for action.

Marvel Heroes – I’ve always had a place in my heart for the action/RPG genre. Games like the Diablo series and Balder’s Gate always took a good deal of my time whenever the latest installment was available. Being a fan of super heroes, a game like Marvel Heroes where I can play as my favorite comic character in this style of play is something I’m really excited about.  Having got a taste of the game at last year’s PAX Prime has only made me hunger for more.

Pikmin 3 – Pikmin was a fun, innovative strategy game that was released originally on the Nintendo GameCube where you have to control these plantlike creatures to help you rebuild your spaceship. Taking full advantage of the Wii U will allow you to have more control of your squads in unique ways. Beware the cute!

Tomb Raider – A game that broke molds when initially released in in 1996 proving that anything a man can do, a woman can do, well, better.  The latest installment is a bit of a reboot taking us back to the roots of the character showing how Lara Croft became the bad mamma jamma we’ve all come to know and love.  Check out this “Survivor” trailer if you’re not convinced you have to own this game.

Aliens™: Colonial Marines – I’ve featured this game in a previous blog post during E3, but now that it’s nearing release in a few weeks, I’m definitely ready to shoot some Xeno’s.  The Aliens film series was a perfect blend of sci-fi and survival horror so getting to dabble in that world is a gamer’s dream come true.

BioShock Infinite – Set in 1912, this first person shooter puts you in the role of Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt who’s sent to the flying city of Columbia to rescue Elizabeth who’s been imprisoned since childhood. But not all is as it seems in Columbia and Elizabeth isn’t your “average girl.” Check out the trailer for a glimpse of this beautiful world.

This is just a sample of some of the great games coming this year. For those that follow the gaming industry, you can expect updates to some of the top franchises out there like Assassin’s Creed or the upcoming Star Wars 1313.  Either way, when the game show circuit kicks off this March with SXSW Gaming and PAX East, it’s going to be a fun ride.
