Wearable Tech – Way of the Future or Fashionable Trends for Tech Trailblazers

Wearables are quickly taking off as a formidable weapon in the “stay in shape” arsenal. Between fitness products like NikeFuel, Fitbit, and Lenovo’s Smartband, or personal devices such as Apple Watch and Google Glass, it doesn’t look like wearable tech is going to be joining the ranks of butterfly collars and parachute pants anytime soon.

But how much is the wearable market really growing?  This infographic courtesy of ShotTracker breaks down the wearable tech market and has some interesting projections on where they think it’s going. Here are some interesting stats:

  • 82% of users believe wearable tech has enhanced their lives
  • $1.4 billion was spent on wearable tech in 2013. ShotTracker projects that number will hit $19 billion by 2018
  • 96% of wearable tech purchased are activity trackers

Given the flexibility, fashionability and functionality of wearable devices, it’s no surprise how popular the trend has become and how it’s expected to grow. These products have solid features that are great in helping people live better, healthier lives.

Looking at NikeFuel, their tagline of “turning life into a sport” is a great reminder to stay active and keep motivated to be on the go by tracking your movement during the course of the day. Once you look at it and see how stationary you’ve been during the course of the day, it’s a great kick in the pants to get you up and at ‘em.

On the flip side, Apple Watch not only covers the health and fitness aspects that gadgets like NikeFuel does, but also takes it one step further (and not just by telling time) allowing you to check your email, send/receive calls and messages and even make payments through the Apple Pay commerce system.

Wearables are not only a prime example of how technology can make life easier, but also a great reminder to get out and enjoy living. Check out the infographic and leave a comment below about your wearable of choice and why.
