What Surprised You Most About E3?

Games. Seeing some quality games at E3 this week surprised me.  I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure I’d see so many.  I had written in this previous post about how the show last year was heavily focused on the technical power of the consoles themselves and how Xbox® One specifically has been positioning itself as an entertainment device, not just a gaming system – a direction Nintendo is quite happy with.

I was hoping that this year would focus more on the games that would be available for each of the major systems and I was not disappointed. I’ll go into specific games in coming weeks or as they get closer to launch but I do want to give some highlights of titles you’ll want to keep an eye on.

Dying Light by Techland – Far from your average zombie shooter, this game really leverages verticality as you use parkour skills to keep one step ahead of the undead who are looking to make you part of their diet.  This is the first game I’ve played in ages, where I have literally screamed nearly wetting myself. It’s fantastic and it is still almost a year from release.

CounterSpy by Dynamighty – The art style for this game was what sucked me in initially. It captures 1950’s cool perfectly and in doing so reminded me a bit of The Incredibles which I am a huge fan of. Releasing this Summer for PlayStation®4, PS3®, PS Vita and mobile/tablets, I’m definitely adding this game to my wish list.

Borderlands: the Pre-Sequel  by Gearbox Software – Two words – Crazy. Fun. Taking place after between the two existing Borderlands games, being in an environment with low gravity is a great addition to any standard FPS game.

Evolve by Turtle Rock Studios/2K Games –  4v1 – you have to love odds like that. You play the monster, 4 others play the hunter. Where it goes from there is anyone’s guess. But this game looked amazing. Don’t believe me? Watch this! I can’t wait to be the Kracken because it’s so good to be bad.

Assassin’s Creed Unity by Ubisoft – I’ll be honest and say that anytime I think I’m getting tired of an Assassin’s Creed game, another one gets announced and I’m ready to give them my money.  Taking place during the French Revolution, you can now play cooperatively with three other players in a very, very crowded Paris during a very time in that nation’s history. Each iteration of the game feels better than the last so I can’t wait to get my hands on this game when it releases later this year.

This is just a tip of what was shown at E3. Nay, a tip of the tip of the tippity tip of a tip of what was on the show floor. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo brought their A-game this year and my wallet is already screaming “no mas” for what is shaping up to be a pricy holiday season.

Were you surprised by any of the games at E3? What games are going on your wish list this season?
