Would You Rather Have a Smaller Tablet or a Larger Phone?

Tomorrow (October 16th depending on when you read this) is Apple’s next consumer event. If keeping true to form, this event will talk about their tablets, laptops and desktop products – basically everything else that’s not about the iPhone.

Just like you, we’ll be watching with great interest to see what updates are coming for Apple’s products. Will tablet cameras be improved? Will storage capacity for mobile devices get an increase? Does size still matter? We’ll all find out together.

I was reading this article on CNET talking about the event, it speculated on what Apple is expected to announce for OSX, iPad Air and iPad Mini – and that’s what prompted the question for me: would you rather have a smaller tablet or a larger phone?

The difference between the iPad Mini and the iPhone 6 Plus is about two and a half inches. Aside from some simple functionality (like actually making a phone call) there are only a few differences between the two products – differences that actually are eliminated with products like Samsung’s Galaxy Note II.  The strategy that Apple has taken to keep those devices separate is an interesting one. Yes, there are various apps that will allow you to use your tablet as a phone, but it’s not natively designed for this.

Maybe this is the year that things change. Maybe the need for a single Apple device that “does it all” is what customers want.  All eyes are going to be on the Apple event tomorrow to see if we’ll get a smaller tablet to go with Apple’s larger phone.
