Backup was once a straightforward and some would say inconsequential process. It happened out of site, after hours, with tapes trucked off site to remote locations. The result was data recovery that was not always fast or reliable. In cases of site disaster or audit requirements the disadvantages of this laissez faire approach quickly became apparent.
Not too long ago – before virtualization and BYOD – data was pretty predictable, it was on the network and only the network. There was a time when IT could dictate which device could be used to securely access the network.
Fast-forward to today. Users access whatever device they own while customers and suppliers expect to access the business around the clock but the predictability of where the data lives is no longer predictable. Unstructured data is off the charts in both growth and projections; IDC projects 44ZB of new data to be created by 2020, with 56% of that data stored in the cloud.
