Basho announces new cloud storage solution

Although storage technology has advanced considerably in terms of capacity and affordability, these evolutions would not be meaningful in enterprise settings without parallel growth in performance. Particularly for cloud storage environments, ensuring low latency is a key component of meeting expectations. Basho Technologies, a Seagate Cloud Builder Alliance partner, announced the release of its Riak CS 1.4 and Riak CS 1.4 Enterprise solutions last month, continuing to fulfill the demands of high-performance cloud storage.

“Riak CS is seeing impressive market adoption, especially from service providers looking to increase their portfolio offering with large object storage,” said Basho CEO Greg Collins. “This release continues our commitment of providing simple and accessible cloud storage for a broad range of cloud computing platforms and use cases. With the addition of OpenStack integration and significant performance improvements, Riak CS 1.4 also appeals strongly to enterprises building their own object storage or adopting a hybrid-cloud deployment methodology.”

Although traditional file storage systems remain in enterprise data centers, robust object storage platforms have become more prevalent for companies that need to manage a large amount of data. Because these systems do not create a file directory, they rely less on metadata, which can diminish performance in large quantities. Simon Robinson, vice president at 451 Research, suggested that Basho’s focus on object storage and the solution’s integration with OpenStack would spur adoption for Riak. Other major features of the new solution include:

Simplified management: Improved APIs when compared with previous versions
Lower bandwidth requirements: Riak CS decreases intracluster bandwidth requirements for object block retrieval by 67 percent
Improved performance for large bucket queries: Improvements to the system indexing process allow for significant performance gains

In addition to these features, the enterprise version enables numerous concurrent communication channels between clusters. This is beneficial for creating backups as well as disaster recovery.
