Technology implementations can result in a significant number of changes for any business. While the goal of most of those changes is likely to provide some kind of value, they can also result in some challenges that aren’t always obvious in the planning process. Budd Van Lines recently exemplified this trend when it upgraded its security cameras.
Budd Van Lines, a corporate relocation service, has been consistently recognized for high quality, as exemplified by recognition from the 2012 Nationwide Relocating Employee Survey. The company’s latest improvement is a step forward in protecting employees and ensuring safe service. Better resolution and crisper video allowed for significant improvements in employee and freight security, but it also created a problem: All of that extra media had to be stored somewhere.
Budd turned to Nexenta, a Seagate Cloud Builder Alliance partner, to meet its new demand. After implementing Nexenta’s OpenStorage solution, the company was able to increase video storage capacity from one terabyte to 84TB and VMware capacity from 11TB to 32TB. When combined with the extra storage afforded for replication and archiving, the total raw capacity increased amounted to approximately 148TB and significant performance improvements. For example, Budd’s input output ratio increased by nearly 300 percent.
