Keynote: Designing Efficient Storage Systems Using both Flash and HDDs

You may recall we made a big splash at the Flash Memory Summit (FMS) in August, showing off the fastest solid-state drive in the world at 10GB/s, the largest SSD at 60TB and the densest M.2 enterprise SSD at 2TB.

But we were also there to offer partners and customers some insights, and to hear from them. Phil Brace, president of Seagate’s cloud systems and silicon group, discussed the new breakthrough products and much more during a keynote speech at the show. See his full keynote in the video below.

Flash Memory Summit is a key industry event worldwide with over 5,000 attendees consisting of industry analysts, investors, press, flash industry influencers and customers.

During his keynote, Brace spoke to a full house on the topic of designing efficient storage systems with flash. He discussed the increased adoption of SSDs and flash, including hybrid architectures, to complement magnetic-recording technologies in traditional enterprise storage arrays, along with the increasing importance of scalable infrastructure in cloud and enterprise data centers, the use of software-defined storage and object storage, the emergence of the NVMe interface and more.

Seagate presented at a total of seven separate sessions at FMS with subjects ranging from “Media Management for High Density NAND Flash Memories” to “Reducing Latency and Improving Performance Consistency in NVMe over Fabrics (NVMeOF).” Seagate also could be found at the FMS theater where we participated in “Chat with the Experts” and enjoyed great interactions with the audience.

Meanwhile also at FMS, our 60TB SAS SSD took the award committee by storm. This unprecedented capacity in a single SSD is nearly four times larger than the largest SSD previously introduced just last year. We are told that the dozen award judges had to unanimously agree on this best of show award for the Seagate SAS SSD, so we feel honored to receive such an award from this esteemed group. Jay Kramer, chair of the awards program and president of Network Storage Advisors, said: “We are proud to select Seagate 60TB SAS SSD for the Best of Show Technology Innovation Award as it nearly quadruples the highest capacity SSD on the market today and enables a whole new set of potential applications for storage solutions in the marketplace.”
