Marathoners & Seagate in Boston Next Week. Achievement is the Common Goal

Spring has finally sprung in the Boston area.

Just as that record breaking snow disappears one of the most anticipated weeks in the calendar arrives. Beginning Monday April 20th approximately 30,000 athletes from virtually every walk of life assemble to compete in the Boston Marathon. The following day 3,000+ life sciences, pharmaceutical, clinical, healthcare, and IT professionals will come together to attend Bio-IT World. The common theme for these two events – striving to achieving excellence.

Seagate, a Platinum Sponsor of Bio-IT World, is part of the fastest growing and economically prosperous areas in healthcare – bioinformatics. More specifically Seagate’s High Performance Computing (HPC) and cloud storage solutions is supporting areas of bioinformatics, such as genomic analysis (genomics) and protein analysis (proteomics). These computationally intensive methods draw upon massive data sets to advance drug discovery and medical treatments, as well as tailor treatment for individual patients, termed “personalized medicine,” where genome analysis is applied to a patent’s own cells in an effort to find drugs specifically targeted to a genetic profile associated with a disease.

While bioinformatics holds great promise to significantly advance health outcomes and ultimately lower health care cost, this emerging area is presently confined to national health research centers and supporting research clinics. Having numerous conflicting requirements, these organizations are under enormous pressure to manage reduced budget, yet leverage state-of-the-art supercomputing facilities, yield truly breakthrough discoveries and share results among collaborators nationally and globally.

How is this achievable? Seagate has the solution for fast and efficient HPC storage as well as secure geo-distributed cloud collaboration. Seagate Storage Accelerates Bioinformatics Pipelines —with scale, performance, security and cost aligned to today’s challenges.  Our multi-tiered data storage solutions enable high-throughput, geo-distributed storage of large data sets, while meeting the complex compliance and data management challenges of high performance computing in bioinformatics.

So once you’ve finished running the marathon or cheering on those that have come to Bio-IT World to see and hear from Seagate about our HPC and Cloud solutions.

Track 8 – Pharmaceutical R&D Informatics
Jose L. Alvarez, Principal Engineer, WW DirectorDATA SCIENCE & ANALYTICS STRATEGIES

10:50 Chairperson Opening Remarks
Presented by Jose L. Alvarez, Principal Engineer, WW Director, Healthcare and Life Sciences at Seagate Cloud and Systems Solutions (CSS)

Track 3 – Cloud Computing
Tyna-CallahanFLEXIBILITY: IT INFRASTRUCTURE

2:55 Leveraging the Cloud to Safeguard Genomic Data and Ensure Its Availability
Presented by Tyna Callahan, Senior Manager, Healthcare Products & Strategy, Seagate CSS – The sheer volume of data that must be retained today is massive—as is the responsibility to keep it intact, and to keep private information out of the wrong hands. Storage experts from Iron Mountain and Seagate CSS will discuss the key considerations for developing a storage strategy that leverages object storage in the cloud to ensure data availability, data integrity, data security and privacy.

Track 1 – IT Infrastructure – Hardware

Jose L. Alvarez, Principal Engineer, WW DirectorSTORAGE EFFICIENCIES USING HADOOP & IMPROVING DATA WORKFLOWS

3:10 Managing Genomic Data at Scale! – Rules Based Intelligent Data Management
Presented by Seagate’s Jose L. Alvarez – The explosion of Genomic data due to new instrument chemistry and more powerful analysis tool sets has created a complex and manual data management problem for high-throughput NGS centers. We will discuss how an intelligent data management solution can address this problem. iRODS (Integrated Rules-Oriented Data System) enables this intelligent data orchestration and can even help with pipeline and workflow automation.
