The issue of vendor lock-in has been a concern among many companies that are consideration a migration to cloud services. The need for greater interoperability between solutions is paramount as many companies utilize a larger variety of technologies from a range of different providers.

From hardware to software
SD Times columnist Alex Handy highlighted the benefit of replicating data centers into cloud storage solutions. Traditional storage systems house all of the information within the physical infrastructure. This either limits the ability of cloud applications or reduces their performance.
“Thus, developers can use these systems internally, but cloud-hosted apps are either unable to use such storage, or must do so through a high-latency connection from the cloud into the data center,” Handy wrote.
By using new storage systems that can automate data migration between hardware and software, companies can leverage cloud applications with all of their data. Bill Roth, vice president of marketing at Nexenta, told SD Times that software-based storage allows developers to customize their storage infrastructures to better fit the needs of their company’s programs.
