Preparation: It Isn’t a ‘Sometime’ Thing

As you read this the 14.5+ million people living among America’s New England states are getting ready for snowfall of possible historic proportions. Add New York City to that mix and the number affected grows by over 8 million. In either case it is anticipated that a lot of lives will be negatively impacted over the next 48 hours. But let’s face it – New Englanders have been looking for a distraction from ‘deflategate’ and in Winter Storm Juno they’ve certainly found it.

Although the resilient nature of area locals is romantically weaved into its historic Yankee past there are always ‘Johnny Come Latelies’ who have waited until now to prepare by either stocking pantries or wood piles. It’s the same in business.

In 2013 a similar storm bore down on the Northeast prompting CNN Money to publish a piece entitled, ‘Big financial impact from weekend blizzard’. Within it was a warning from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, that “snowstorms can have a devastating effect on the economy. They can stop the flow of supplies, take out communication towers, sink ships and kill off livestock in one fell swoop. On top of that hourly workers lose wages because stores, restaurants and bars are forced to close down for days at a time.”

It’s never been more apparent than now that business – which prepared for this winter storm or (believe it or not) those yet unnamed hurricanes that will make landfall six months from now – will be less impacted by the damage it can cause.

Case Study – Weathering Superstorm Sandy

Just as being prepared isn’t a sometime thing neither is winter the only time of year when it’s good to be ready. Despite distinct seasons for tornadoes and hurricanes each can move so quickly that large communities are often caught off-guard. So too can the random unpredictability of earthquakes.  As a case-in-point, through this customer video, we highlight the actions of a New York City bridal boutique in the aftermath of 2012’s Superstorm Sandy.
