Seagate Named Top 100 Global Innovator by Thomson Reuters — Third Year Running

Seagate recently announced that it has been named to the Thomson Reuters Top 100 Innovators 2014 list. The program, an initiative of the IP & Science business of Thomson Reuters, honors the 100 corporations and institutions around the world that are at the heart of innovation as measured by a series of proprietary patent-related metrics. This is the third time Seagate has received this honor.

“Innovation is core to Seagate’s continued success as a leading provider of fundamental storage technology and products,” said Seagate CEO, Steve Luczo. “It is an honor to be recognized by such a respected organization, and serves as further validation of the outstanding research and development work our employees continue to deliver at Seagate.”

The Thomson Reuters Innovation list is compiled using patent application information. It is part of a four-part methodology, comprised of the following (abbreviated) criteria. Click here to review the full descriptions.

  1. Volume: “companies that are responsible for generating a sizeable amount of innovation”;

  2. Success: “measures the ratio of inventions described in published applications…”;

  3. Global: “the number of inventions that have quadrilateral patents in their patent families, according to the Thomson Reuters Quadrilateral Patent Index, was calculated to create a ratio that shows which companies place a high value on their portfolios in major world markets.”

  4. Influence: “Through the Thomson Reuters Derwent Patent Citation Index database, citations to each organizations’ patents were counted over the most recent five years, excluding self citations.”

“The Thomson Reuters Top 100 Global Innovators prove that they are the companies driving economic growth, creating jobs, and pioneering new products and services,” said Basil Moftah, president, Thomson Reuters IP & Science. “We congratulate this year’s companies and are honored to recognize their outstanding accomplishment.”
