Supermicro shows cloud gaming solutions at CES

Supermicro, a Seagate Cloud Builder Alliance partner, is showcasing new end-to-end cloud gaming solutions at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. These products include servers and workstations optimized for on-demand gameplay by concurrent users, with high GPU density that supports immersive graphical experiences.

Supermicro’s CES demonstration reveals how high-performance cloud computing has moved beyond the enterprise and entered the mainstream. Many prominent video game franchises now feature extensive online services, but these amenities have to be supported on the backend by powerful cloud hardware appliances. Supermicro has stepped to the plate with its 1U, 2U and 4U/Tower products, all of which are NVIDIA certified for superior performance.

The 1Us feature up to four NVIDIA GRID K430 or K520 GPUs that can support between 24 and 72 game streams. The 2Us have up to six GPUs, while the 4U/Tower models may support as many as 12 GPUs.

“Cloud-based gaming is a natural extension of console and PC-based gaming and Supermicro has the industry’s widest range of enterprise class GPU server solutions optimized for this dynamic, compute-intensive application,” stated Supermicro CEO and president Charles Liang. “Our servers offer the highest GPU density in their class, supporting up to four GPUs in 1U, six in 2U and even twelve GPUs in a 4U FatTwin. With the most flexible server solutions available to maximize HD quality game streams, we help customers increase productivity and profitability.”

Supermicro also showed some products targeted at end users. Its Mid-Tower SuperServer supports the Intel i3, i5 and i7 processors and can be overclocked up to 23 percent, or to a user-defined level. With HDMI, VGA, DVI and Thunderbolt ports, it can support three external displays at once. It can also be equipped with 32GB of DDR3 RAM.
