During last November’s OpenStack Paris Summit,  ‎Senior Business Development Manager, at Seagate, Shai Tsur was met with a camera crew from cloud-channel.tv who captured a series of compelling vignettes, which we will share with you over the coming weeks.

In the first Shai addresses some of the drivers behind the explosion of cloud storage within which he compares the hundreds of petabytes that are, today, being locally locally to the anticipated 7.5 zetabytes of storage – more specifically object storage – that will need to be stored within five years.

Among the causes of this growth are the prolific pictures – saved to social media accounts as wells as video content. The need for object storage can be understood through these content types, which are being stored but not modified.

The second (related) video in this series addresses Seagate’s Kinetic drive and its unique ability to manage the object storage addressed in the first clip.  As Shai points out Kinetic includes two key modifications. The first is an added chip, which turns the drive into a key value store – in other words Kinetic includes an object storage protocol. This eliminates object storage applications needing to translate down through file systems to blocks and sectors and guess about where to store the data on the device. The second item is the ability for the drive to ‘speak’ Ethernet, which enables users to put these devices anywhere on their network. In combination Kinetic enables the entire storage architecture to become much more efficient.
