How to Adapt to the Data Deluge — Talk HPC with Seagate at ISC 2016

Meet up with Seagate at ISC 2016 to discuss the current HPC (high-performance computing) landscape, top trends, and how to best adapt to the “Data Deluge” era which is breaking up HPC system architectures that have served us well for over 30 years, both architecturally and economically.

In his recent Inside HPC interview, Ken Claffey, Seagate’s vice president and general manager for Storage Systems, discussed our presence at the show. “We want to spend time with our customers and partners to not only look ahead, but reflect on our achievements,” Claffey said.

Performance – what is the next step in technologies and architectures?

Supercomputing over this last year has set its sights on the next regime of performance, that of 100+ petaflops. Planning for this near term capability has been strongly driven by the next step in technologies and architectures as well as a clear demand from future multi-physics, multi-scalar applications, and big data problems such as machine learning. In Asia, the US and Europe, strategies and support for the next plateau in operational capabilities are being established with target deployment dates of 2017 and 2018 a strong likelihood. These advances will push the field out of what is perceived by many as a period of stagnation and into a long-awaited future.

For partners and customers who can meet with Seagate at the show, Claffey says the company is here to listen, as well as to strategize and share solutions.

“What we see from our customers is that they are less focused on a specific technology but more focused on how they solve their I/O related problems,” Claffey said in the Inside HPC Interview. “For example is it a small file I/O problem, is it a sequential throughput problem or more of a random I/O problem? Seagate then has solutions and technologies to address all of these issues in the most efficient way possible.

“New technologies like NVMe and 3D XPoint, Hybrid and SME Drives and our HPC drive are all part of the tiered HPC storage hierarchy. So, rather than being focused on a specific point technology, we are really focused on solving our customer’s problems by utilizing the industry’s broadest array of capability that spans from core technology of HDD, SSD to Systems and Software.”

Here’s where you can find us at the show:

  • 1:1 with Seagate SME’s – Sign up here to set a time with to discuss your specific storage challenges.
  • At the booth – At booth 1220 Seagate will be exhibiting its latest ClusterStor solutions for high-performance and active archive storage.
  • HP-CAST – Seagate’s Torben Kling-Petersen is speaking again, this time at HP-CAST on Saturday June 18th at 9am.

Thinking about stopping by Seagate’s booth? We hope you do! Schedule an appointment to meet with us to learn why in a few short years Seagate has become the #1 HPC storage choice for new supercomputers.

Three reasons to visit Seagate’s booth:

  • Learn about the ClusterStor A200 the only active archive object store designed specifically for HPC. The A200 can plug into existing HPC environments and serve as an active archive tier for IBM Spectrum Scale or Lustre. The A200 can save up to 50% overall storage costs by allowing organizations to offload data from the expensive primary storage tier to a cost effective active archive with 2-3x better performance than existing object storage solutions.
  • Get information on the Intel Enterprise Edition for Lustre Software coming soon to ClusterStor L300.
  • Discover a storage new choice for IBM(R) Spectrum Scale(TM) with the ClusterStor G200, built on the same purpose-engineered hardware that made Seagate the #1 storage choice for modern HPC deployments.

See you soon at ISC 2016!
