Which drives support Seagate Secure?

Why is my password not working?

  • Your Seagate Secure password is case-sensitive. Try entering the password with your keyboard caps lock on (as well as off), just in case it was enabled when you created the password.

Can Seagate or LaCie recover my password?

  • No, a password cannot be recovered if it is forgotten, not even by Seagate or LaCie.
  • If you previously set up a password reset key, you can use the key to reset the drive's password while preserving the data on the drive. The password reset key feature is available in Seagate Secure version 3.0 or higher. See the Toolkit User Manual for additional information and instructions.

Can I reset my password?

  • If you've forgotten your password, you can reset it provided you previously set up a password recovery key. See the Toolkit User Manual for additional information and instructions.

Can I change my password?

Where are the SID and PSID?

  • The SID and PSID may be found:
    • On the printed insert in the box with your Seagate Secure compatible device
    • By scanning the QR code on the drive's label
    • Printed on the drive's label
    • Under the orange bumper on LaCie Rugged drives
  • Note that single drive devices will have only one PSID, while dual drive devices such as the LaCie Rugged RAID Shuttle will have two PSIDs.

Do I have to use Seagate Secure if it came with my drive?

  • No, the Seagate Secure feature is not required for your drive to be functional. Simply skip the password setup when installing Toolkit.

How do I remove the password from my drive?

  • There are two ways to remove a password:
    • Disable Password – How to disable security
      NOTE:
      • You must know your current password to disable the security feature
      • To re-enable the password feature you will need to use the old password
    • Factory Reset - How to factory reset your drive
      • WARNING: This will completely erase the drive, make sure to have the data backed up.
      • Requires your PSID but you do not need to know your current password.

Can I stop using the password without erasing the drive?

  • Yes, if you want to stop using a password to access the drive, you can disable it. This will not affect the data on the drive. How to disable security

Can I format a locked drive?

  • No, a locked drive is read-only and cannot be formatted using native operating system tools. If you need to format the drive, unlock the drive with your password, and then reformat the drive. If you cannot remember your password, you'll need to factory reset the drive. WARNING: This will delete all of the data on the drive. The data cannot be recovered. What is crypto-erase?

  • A crypto-erase securely deletes all data on the drive while keeping your security settings in place. Your password remains the same. WARNING: This will delete all of the data on the drive.
