The Newest External SSDs: Speed, Style and Space

Seagate today announced a new lineup of hip and portable solid-state drives that are super compact. The Seagate One Touch SSD, One Touch SSD Special Edition and Expansion SSD were unveiled at the IFA consumer-technology show in Berlin.

Here’s what’s new.

One Touch SSD

Credit-card small and greyhound fast, the new One Touch SSD blends chic textile design with swift SSD and USB 3.0 transfers, continuous backup, plus access to awesome apps like Mylio and Adobe. The result? A personalized, on-the-go solution that lets you seamlessly scroll, edit, organize, and directly stream a huge collection of stored photos and videos.

The drive’s internal SATA-type SSD offers transfer speeds of up to 400MB per second and works with Windows and Macs without needing to reformat. The One Touch is available in black and white color options and capacities of 500GB and 1TB.

“The One Touch SSD is the perfect go-to SSD for every consumer’s everyday uses,” said Connie Wai, product marketing manager at Seagate.

The drive, part of Seagate’s Backup Plus portable storage family, includes a USB 3.0 cable and Seagate’s Toolkit with Sync Plus software for continuous backup. Also included: a one-year Mylio Create plan for organizing photos and creating a calendar of digital memories and a two-month subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan for editing, storing and sharing full-resolution photos from anywhere.

“We’ve leveraged a lot of the features from our Backup Plus family that many consumers are familiar with, including the textured fabric from our Backup Plus Ultra Touch,” said Paul McParland, Seagate VP of product development, consumer solutions group. “It’s extremely light, compact and easy to carry around.”

The One Touch SSD retails for $105 (500GB) and $200 (1TB) and is available worldwide later this month.

One Touch SSD Special Edition

Meanwhile, the camo-clad One Touch SSD Special Edition is the perfect solution for managing files with extra flair. Consumers can choose from a fun selection of colorful camouflage options while enjoying all the performance and perks of the original.

“From crowded subways to bustling streets, the camo-clad One Touch SSD Special Edition is the city dweller’s solution for managing files in an urban jungle,” said Seagate marketer Heather Pugh. “Transfer high-res photos faster and stream videos directly from your drive to your laptop with SSD-boosted speeds of up to 400MB/s. Whether you’re traveling, at the office, or just scrolling through old memories, One Touch SSD comes ready with on-the-go durability and space for must-have content.”

The 500GB drive retails for $110.

Expansion SSD

The new Expansion SSD delivers USB 3.0 backup and offers transfer speeds of up to 400MB/second, and rapid performance for streaming videos directly from the drive.

Consumers can use it to easily add data storage to their computers—just drag and drop photos and videos to the drive and you’re done. The SATA SSD, available in 500GB and 1TB capacities, works with Windows and Macs, no reformatting needed. It also delivers extra peace of mind with an included three-year limited warranty.

“This drive is small, fast and on-the-go ready,” said Wai. “We’ve designed it so that it’s beyond easy, delivering a great experience, right out of the box. It’s made for people who need more space from their internal hard drives but don’t need a big external desktop drive.”

The Expansion SSD retails for $100 (500GB) and $190 (1TB) and is available worldwide later this month.
