In-time for FMS 2015 Seagate Reveals New SAS SSD

In the first product from Seagate’s alliance with Micron, this week the industry learned about the 1200.2 Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Solid State Drive (SSD).

The 1200.2 SSD is engineered for enterprise and cloud users that need ultra-fast performance and a wide range of capacity and endurance options. But before demonstrations of the 1200.2 SAS SSD will be seen (in Seagate’s booth #505) during next week’s Flash Memory Summit the industry media is already weighing-in on the news.

From SearchStorage…

“Although less expensive Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) SSDs remain the most popular choice for enterprise SSDs, Seagate chose to parlay its expertise in SAS with Micron’s NAND flash for their first collaborative effort, which targets enterprise and cloud use cases.”

“The enterprise SSD market is on pace to grow to more than $6 billion this year, and SAS SSDs are one of the fastest growing drive types, according to Jeff 1200.2-SSD-Dynamic-Hi-ResJanukowicz, research director at IDC, based in Framingham, Mass. He wrote via email that revenue for SAS SSDs grew more than 60% on a year-over-year basis during the first quarter.”

From The Register…

“The 1200.2 is the first SSD, Seagate says, to optimize dual-port SAS capability, resulting in sequential read speeds of up to 1.5GB/sec, compared to a maximum of 750MB/sec with the earlier 1200 SAS SSD….”

“The pattern shown indicates that, as capacity goes up, endurance goes down. The four models all have an average latency of 115μs and are optimized for reading over writing. Generally, as endurance goes up so too does IOPS and bandwidth performance, with random read IOPS and sequential write bandwidth changing most.”

The Seagate 1200.2 SAS SSD is engineered for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and system builder partners who design and build scalable, modular storage solutions for enterprise applications. It’s also available to enterprise end users who want to directly upgrade and expand their existing SAS storage infrastructure and investment.

For enterprise and cloud customers with critical production systems requiring high data availability, the drive delivers the data integrity required in the event of an unexpected power loss. The Seagate 1200.2 SAS SSD provides superior data protection and reliability that protects data from undetected, unintentional corruption and prevents unauthorized access to the drive and stored data with three levels of security.
