A:Drive…the end of an era?

Sony recently announced they are discontinuing production of the ever popular 3.5-inch floppy disk.  For those of you too young to appreciate the A: drive, it was a mainstay for desktop computers for the last 3 decades. You can check out a history of the floppy disk here, and to get a user appreciation of the technology, check out the string of comments on Gizmodo.

What’s ironic about this iconic component?

The “floppy” was invented by IBM engineers led by Alan Shugart – Seagate’s beloved founder.

Time to replace my Sony Mavica.

How will you remember the floppy?

This is just weird, I remember using floppy disks in elementary and Jr High and I thought was coolest kid (nerd) having me a nice set of floppies. Now that it’s coming to an end, it feels that the computer world is going to be missing an icon. Farewell Floppy
